Here are a few resources you may want to consult in your quest:

The Pension Rights Center is a nonprofit organization devoted to helping people find their retirement benefits. The organization has a Web site and links to local pension rights centers.

The Department of Labor's Pension and Welfare Benefits Administration may be able to provide additional assistance. Check their Web site for the location of your nearest field office. Further, this site has a helpful booklet titled What You Should Know About Your Pension Rights.

Freeerisa.com is a free Web site that can help you find an employer's Form 5500. That's the annual report a 401(k) plan is required by law to file with the IRS.

The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp., which supports defined-benefit plans, offers a free online booklet that explains how to track down lost pensions. Many of the tips in it could be used to find 401(k) money.
